The Midwest Human Rights Consortium (MHRC) is a unique multi-institutional collaborative of legal, medical and mental health providers.
Launched in 2019, MHRC is a referral network for forensic asylum evaluations. These evaluations support the increasing legal needs of children and families navigating the U.S. immigration system. In fiscal year 2021, the U.S. government reported a continuing backlog of 1.1 million asylum-seekers who were awaiting adjudication of their claims inside the United States.
Since its inception, MHRC has supported the development of several asylum clinics throughout the Chicagoland area. MHRC has streamlined a referral process between attorneys and evaluators. We have fulfilled requests for forensic evaluations for people from various countries around the world.
MHRC is housed under the Refugee Immigrant Child Health Initiative of the Illinois Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP). Read our feature in the Winter 2022 ICAAP newsletter.
